The Two Men in My Life

By Waheeda Khan

One loved me from the moment our eyes met, I loved the other before we’d even met.

One walks ahead, keeping his own steady stride, The other walks with me, right by my side.

One is caring and protective, but old-school in his way, The other is gentle, warm and loving, with affection on display.

Some may look at me and envy my fate, And think such blessings simply come by chance. But my dear ones, it isn’t luck alone— There is much more to love than a twist of circumstance.

For love like this is not something you merely find, It is nurtured with patience, with heart and with time; It is earned through the years by the way that you live. With discipline, forgiveness, and all that you give.

Perhaps that is when the Almighty smiles from above, And blesses your life with an abundance of love. Not one, but two beautiful men by my side, Two different kinds of love, in which we both abide.

The man who fell in love with me Is now like an old banyan tree; Deep-rooted, strong and standing tall, A quiet shelter through spring and fall.

And the man whom I loved before I even saw, Was once a little seedling, delicate and raw; Now tall, strong and steady, he has grown with grace, Nurtured by my love, in its warm embrace.

Two different men. Two different kinds of love. Two different journeys… And one very blessed woman— Me.
